THE ENCHANTED ROSE:
“The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another, and earn their love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time.”
―Narrator
Before the Beast was turned into a Beast, he was a human Prince. An old beggar lady came to his castle door and asked for shelter from the bitter winter cold. She offered him a beautiful rose in return for warmth and shelter, however the Prince turned her away because of her poor appearance. The old lady warned the prince not to judge people on their looks for true beauty is from within. When the prince, did not heed her warning, she revealed herself as a beautiful enchantress. The old lady saw that the prince had no love in his heart, so cursed him by turning him into a Beast and all his helpers into enchanted objects.
The old lady left the Beast with the same rose as a reminder. She promised him that it would bloom until his 21st birthday if he could learn to love, and earn in love in return before the last petal fell, the spell would be broken. If he however failed, and the last petal fell, he, and all of his helpers within the castle would remain under the spell- and he a beast, forever. The Beast kept the rose encased in a class cover, that served as a countdown and a reminder of his selfishness and cruelty, and how long he had left before being doomed. When the Beast turned 21, the rose began to wilt and the countdown began.
The rose was only seen a few time throughout the film, however served a constant reminder of the Beasts fate. The enchanted rose made its first appearance after the Beast's failed attempt to get Belle to have dinner with him. After the Beast heard Belles comment of not wanting to have anything to do with him because he was mean and nasty, a petal fell. The rose was later seen when Belle entered the West Wing against the Beasts orders not too. Belle proceeded to lift the glass covering and was about to touch it, when the Beast caught her and yelled at her for nearly destroying the rose by accident. The rose appears one final time when the Beast begins to die and Belle professes her love for him just as the last petal falls. As the Beast had succeeded in gaining ones love not for his appearance, the spell was broken, and her and the enchanted objects were restored to their original forms.
