DISNEY VERSION - BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Walt Disney’s ‘Beauty And The Beast’ begins the story by explaining why the beast has been placed under a spell and cursed as a beast. We are introduced to Belle, a beautiful, intelligent and desired woman throughout the township. She is a love interest of Gaston who is a vain man who is solely interested in Belle because of her fortunate looks. Belle’s father Maurice is an inventor and is considered ‘crazy’ within the town. On his horse Phillipe, Maurice rides his new invention to the show. Along the way, he takes a wrong turn and becomes lost in the forest. Maurice, cold and alone, eventually stumbles upon a gigantic mansion. He quickly enters and is greeted by kind voices that welcome him. It is not long before the Beast finds Maurice and throws him into the dungeons for trespassing.
After Phillipe makes it safely back to the village alone, Belle realises that her father is missing and something is terribly wrong. She quickly hurries to find him and is taken to the castle. Belle enters and discovers her father, sick and in poor health, trapped in a dungeon. Soon Belle comes across the Beast and makes a deal with him to stay as prisoner in exchange for her father’s freedom. The Beast agrees and Maurice is set free. Belle is miserable in the castle and the Beast is scary and mean to Belle. After some time, and a talking to from cogsworth (clock) , Lumiere’ (candlestick) and Mrs Potts (teapot), the Beast becomes more friendly to Belle. He possesses a rose that is wilting, and when the last petal falls, the Beast and all the staff within the house that are prisoned as enchanted objects will remain that way forever.
Although the Beast told Belle to never enter the West Wing, she does so anyway out of curiosity. She stumbles across the beautiful rose. She is about to touch it when the Beast enters and scares her. She runs away and out to the forest to escape the Beast. Suddenly, Belle comes across some angry wolves and they begin to attack her. Thankfully, the Beast follows Belle and fights the wolves off, although obtaining some injuries himself. Belle tends to his wounds and from that moment on they become close friends. Meanwhile, back at the village, Gaston tries to have Maurice thrown into an asylum for being crazy in an attempt to persuade Belle to marry him in return for Maurice’s release. At the castle, Belle is missing her father and the Beast shows Belle an enchanted mirror that shows her anything she wants to see. Belle envisions her father, and she see's him in trouble, lost and scared in the woods searching for Belle. Belle begs the beast to release her so she can save her father. The Beast agrees and Belle rescues her father and takes him safely back home.
Meanwhile, there is a knock at the door and it is Gaston and Mr D’Arque coming to collect Maurice and throw him into an asylum. Belle protests and explains that she can prove that her father is not crazy and produces the mirror the Beast gave her. She shows the entire village that there is truly a Beast and Maurice was not crazy. This only enrages Gaston more! The villagers storm the castle to try and kill the Beast and battle the enchanted objects. Gaston searches for the Beast and initially is winning the battle. The Beast appears defeated and has given up all hope that Belle will ever return to him until he see’s Belle and fights back to defeat Gaston. Belle is so relieved to see the Beast and cries out to him that she loves him. A magical transformation begins to occur, breaking the curse and changing the beast and the enchanted objects back to humans. Belle and the Beast kiss, and they all live happily ever after.
